Image
The format of this blog is just going to be the word for word dialog perhaps with some commentary interspersed throughout. Which will be denoted by italics and parentheses. If it happens mid sentence there was no pause I just feel the need to clarify.  Me: So I am Matthew Hudson this is my father John Hudson Dad: Good Evening   M: Talkin’ about a generation above me's music and what he listened to what he experienced etc first question being what has been your earliest experience with music that you can remember? D: The earliest memory was traveling with my parents to the beach or traveling with my parents in general, and they are of the generation that really enjoyed The Temptations, The Platters, The Drifters, Mo-Town, or beach music. Which to this day I think its the best music ever recorded. It was classy it had a horn line it had meeting there was nothing but respect in the lyrics that stuck with me a long time. It also gave me a better appreciation of rock or...

Contemporary/ Modern Folk Music around America

Image
Like many other genres folk is a parent to many different sub genres such as Folk Rock, Folk Metal, Blue Grass, Psychedelic Folk, Indie Folk, Anti Folk and Progressive Folk. However, this isn't an exhaustive list. With a music genre that is almost as old as acoustic instruments, it's not surprising how folk music has evolved, changed and otherwise morphed into what it is today. Here we will be talking a look into contemporary folk music. While, yes, a rather broad spectrum of music there are lines that connect them all.     To start it is important to home in on what folk music is and what characteristics it has. The essence of folk music is that it's passed down traditionally, not recorded and enjoyed by regional group. However, with the ugly beauty that is the internet this genre becomes not obsolete but treasured, and with this new* fangled internet comes more stipulations on what folk music is. First and foremost, is the use of aco...

Music and Gender

Image
(Disclaimer before you read, I may use 'male and man, woman and female' interchangeably. I'm not too well versed in the graces of modern gender theory; however, I don't mean to come across as ignorant or uncaring. Also, if I use slang terms denoting gender I am NOT using in a pejorative or reductionist way. I just want to keep this blog rather lighthearted)  First, to tackle the question of ' Have different genders listened to different types of music or  been expected  to listen to different types of music?'. Yes, and yes. Within my narrow experience of just a white guy there is a level societal gender norms when it comes to the type of music one is to listen to. For example, if I tell someone to "picture a listener of Iron Maiden" I would be surprised if the majority of responders came back and said woman. On the same token if I say, "picture a Taylor Swift fan", dollars to donuts a man will not be the first thing to come to mind.  The nex...

Music and Rituals

I've started writing this during the break of Tuesday's class and one of the questions Dr. Vaneman left us with that I've been chewing on was "What purpose does sad music hold in formal (or informal) settings?" Reducing that down to what is the purpose of sad music: Mainly catharsis, that is the release or breaking of psychological tension. However, in formal settings such as funerals the purpose of sad music feels more reflective if that makes sense. Regardless we've now already had a class discussion on this and don't want to rehash a everything we just said.   Moving onto less sad of a topic and I'm honestly unsure why my mom and dad decided on changing it up from the traditional wedding march song, but instead of that of the "Here Comes the Bride" instrumental song Canon in D was played. While I wasn't even a thought yet. I still really enjoy the song, maybe because it's so easy, maybe because we coincidently played it in like mi...

Music And Me

Image
Most of the things I listen to make me self-conscious just because my taste is well strange, buuuut I was recommended One Headlight by The Wallflowers and I've been on a late 90's alt rock kick recently.  (the worst thumbnail I know) The Wallflowers - One Headlight (Official Music Video) (youtube.com)     Now this is when it gets strange. My brother introduced me to this song and one of the ways we would bond is trying new whiskeys together. The song is titled The Humors of Whiskey by Colm R. McGuinness. I don't see my brother much anymore but whenever I'm missing him, I'll put this song and mumble sing along to it with a glass of what is sweeter than honey and stronger than steam. Another song that means a lot to me and because it is associated with a place for me is Another Bag of Bones by Kevin Devine. I can't quite remember how old I was maybe mid-teens, but my mom and dad took me to New York. The first day was complet...
