Music And Me
Most of the things I listen to make me self-conscious just because my taste is well strange, buuuut I was recommended One Headlight by The Wallflowers and I've been on a late 90's alt rock kick recently.
(the worst thumbnail I know)
The Wallflowers - One Headlight (Official Music Video) (youtube.com) Now this is when it gets strange. My brother introduced me to this song and one of the ways we would bond is trying new whiskeys together. The song is titled The Humors of Whiskey by Colm R. McGuinness. I don't see my brother much anymore but whenever I'm missing him, I'll put this song and mumble sing along to it with a glass of what is sweeter than honey and stronger than steam. Another song that means a lot to me and because it is associated with a place for me is Another Bag of Bones by Kevin Devine. I can't quite remember how old I was maybe mid-teens, but my mom and dad took me to New York. The first day was complete and total culture shock. Walking the streets of New York when you're raised in South Carolina, is absolutely jarring. However, as I got acclimated to my surroundings day by day, I got more used to random people walking up to me trying to sell me things and the well interesting characters of Times Square. I'd put my earbuds in and wear a jaded face listening to that song as a new stench of New York hits me every corner I turn.
The type of music that doesn't resonate with me is the strictly contemporary country type of music. Which within introspection feels strange as one of my favorite genres is folk music especially American folk music which really isn't that many degrees removed from country music, and in all honesty, I couldn't tell you what I don't like about most country music. Although a sizable portion of my distaste to country music is typically the timbre of the vocals in addition to the typical single guitar. Now what I enjoy about folk music though is also the singular guitar, and maybe a fiddle thrown in there too. With folk music it feels like there is a lot more soul, then again, I'm sure someone feels the exact same way about country too.
As the final sign off the now defunct band Bay Faction was/is one of my favorite bands of all time. Their album by the same name Bay Faction, carried me though high school and in my opinion is one of the most underrated bands of all time.
